Family Support
 

Family Support Services includes Recreation, Autism Skill Building, Community Residential Habilitation, Family Care, Sib Shops, Parent Support and Education and Family Education & Training (FET).

Recreation:
CDS Recreation offers a variety of specialized recreation services that are unique because they offer a truly integrated  setting for participants.

  •     Many of the programs are offered in collaboration    with community recreation centers
  •     We offer small group activities designed for each age group (5 years- adulthood)
  •     Transportation is available with many of our activities
  •     We offer one-on-one activities with Brockport College students for participants ages 5-18 (12 sessions per year, held on Saturday afternoons)

Autism Skill Building:
This program is designed to help individuals with Autism increase their skill development.  Participants will work on:

  • Increasing their socialization skills
  • Handling their own emotions
  • Recognizing stress & developing techniques to cope with stress
  • Opportunity for peer interaction & support
  • For individuals ages 6-16
  • Program offered Monday-Friday for 2 hours afterschool

      *** special summer hours offered

Community Residential Habilitation:
This is provided to individuals in their home and community.

  • An individualized plan is developed based on the needs of the individual
  • Staff assists individuals in developing those identified needs
  • Individuals are provided one-on-one skill development & community inclusion in a natural environment promoting independence

Family Care:
Family care is an alternative residential placement opportunity that provides support to individuals with developmental disabilities in a true family setting.  Individualized care is offered by a trained provider in their family home, certified by OMRDD (Office of Mental Retardation & Developmental Disabilities).

Sib Shops:
Sib Shops provide brothers and sisters of individuals with developmental disabilities the opportunity for peer support and education through fun activities in a relaxed environment.
    

  • 10 sessions per year
  • Sessions held at CDS' Life Transitions Center, 860 Hard Road, in Webster on Saturday mornings from 10-noon

Parent Support and Education:
This is an opportunity for parents and family members of people with developmental disabilities to come together for support, resources, and information sharing.  The groups offer networking and support, and education through scheduled presenters that focus on a variety of topics. 

CDS has a lending library with publications, videos and articles on a variety of topics related to developmental disabilities
    

  • Sessions offered 1st Monday and 3rd Thursday of the month from 6-8pm
  • Sessions rotate between our 650 Blossom Road site and 860 Hard Road

Family Education & Training:
Family Education & Training provides trainings to families of individuals under the age of 18.  The purpose of these sessions is to:

  • Enhance the decision-making capacity of the family unit
  • Provide orientation about the nature and impact of developmental disabilities upon your love one and you
  • Inform families about our services
  • Sessions offered 1-2 times per month from 6-8pm at 650 Blossom Road
