Seneca Park Zoo Partners with CDS Garden Club
Tuesday, June 30, 2009
Representatives from the Seneca Park Zoo visited CDS last week to plant a garden for butterflies and educate all at CDS about butterflies and their needs.
In 2002, the Zoo launched the Butterfly Beltway program to encourage butterfly gardens that would support the migrating monarch. Over the past seven years, the zoo has established more than 75 butterfly gardens at places like CDS, with the help of corporate sponsorships & grants. Staff from the Zoo return to the garden each year to maintain the plants & flowers. Zoo staff will return to CDS to do a butterfly release, when the weather cooperates. This year, the Zoo will release 500-600 tagged monarchs at its different facilities.
